Power supplies as a general term refers to a reference or a source of electrical power. This usually comes in the form of device that supplies electrical or other types of energy to an output load. An ideal power supply is characterized by a smooth and constant output voltage regardless of variations in the voltage, load current or ambient temperature. There are essentially two types of power supply: commercial power supply and medical power supply. The main difference between commercial and medical power supplies is that the latter addresses the need to eliminate shock hazard to patients and the medical teams that care for them. Medical power supplies are safer because of the special consideration for safety in manufacturing. Considerable spacing between conductive parts is a general practice in the manufacture of medical power supplies. A medical power supply's EMC (Electromagnetic compatibility) performance is a trying concern for medical applications. All modern power supplies are switch-mode designs. The motive for this design is basically to give the users a “safety switch” should there be an error during medical applications. However, switch-mode supplies generate electromagnetic interference and require filters to limit the effect of treatment. This has been a consistent case for improvement among medical power supplies developers and distributors although some have already found work-arounds for this. As such, no specific literature has been written about their successes and the issue still presses on.
